9th day post-op!!

Welcome! Welcome! It has been almost 3 years since I posted on this blog. The last time was to document our move to Phoenix from Minneapolis. I am reviving this to update friends and family on my recovery from spinal fusion.

 Today is the 9th day after my fusion surgery. It is going well so far. For the most part, the pain has been what I was expecting. Tuesday and Wednesday both gave me a run for my money. But other than those it has been fairly good.

 The two images below show the condition I have. It is bi-lateral pars defects. In the first image you see a small crack in the vertebrae a little to the right of center. In the second image you see the cross-section of the spine looking down. That isn't an image of my personal x-ray but it gives you a good idea.






The image below here shows the procedure I had done. It is a transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. It took the surgeon about 3 hours to do after we spent about 1 hour in pre-op.




9 days out and I feel good that this will work and I will be back to normal again. Below is an image from my vision/inspiration wall. I hope to get back to being active with the fam in the next few months. The entire recovery will be about one year.

Dan, you’ve been through a lot, that looks really painful! Thank you for updating the blog and for letting us know what’s going on and how you’re doing, we’ve been concerned, praying, and now we will amp the prayers. God give you full and complete restoration of every fiber in your being, deliver you from fear, and flood your mind body and spirit to overflowing with his presence and his peace and all comfort in the name of Jesus. friday the weather report looked great for the weekend. saturday morning i went in to swimming lessons with Henry during a beautiful May morning at 9:30 and walked out at 10:30 to completely overcast and a funny, stormy feeling breeze. what's going on? got home to see that storm clouds produced in seconds at some point and were about to hit the twin cities. Henry was now sick (he worked so hard to keep going at swimming lessons) and laying in bed. B and the boys were not going to the Freewheel Frolic. i packed up and headed out in a driving rain and lightning. i had heard from a friend at the race that the sport start was postponed but nothing cancelled yet. got there and saw two lightning strikes nearby. went to register and the steel at the starting chute was layed down wisely. sport took off about 1 i think. expert at 2:30 with us in comp 5 minutes behind. i have got to get better at staging because i was still in the 3rd wave when my wave (the 2nd) took off. you would

First blood

Henry did his first mountain bike race at Elk River a couple of weeks ago. It was 3 miles. He has done a lot more than that at Theo plenty of times. The 3 miles at Hillside in Elk River was different though. It was a lot more climbing and roots than I expected. Henry had to walk quite a bit. When we walked the mosquitos would feast. It was rough on the little guy. He was tempted to quit (he even had some tears) but he kept at it and finished. It was another good reason to be proud of him on a pretty long list. Henry said some funny stuff during the race. A couple of my favorites were, "I'm getting pretty dirty, maybe I should take a bath." and "I hope I get a scratch, that would be cool." After the race he scored a digital camera from the drawing. He was very stoked. It was a good thing too it may have convinced him to give bike racing another try.

lake in the sky

77 minutes. 20 miles. felt like 26 degrees. a beautiful fog coming off Cedar and Calhoun lakes. the lakes are melting up into the sky. top of the midtown building also wrapped in fog. the past week has been great for the path clearing off. almost totally clear now. usually riding temps between 26 and 33 the past few morning outings. layers are down to tights, long sleeve jersey, light windbreaker, shoe covers (may not need those), helmet liner, and regular gloves or lobster gloves. figured out how to get the shuffle to play podcasts so i am now rolling to the Currents songs of the day and that is pretty awesome. the shuffle has been great. regular ipod stops working at about 20 to 25 degrees out.
